The Panzer III Ausf J had its armor protection significantly improved as it ranged from 10mm to 50mm. When encountered in North Africa, British nicknamed the 50mm L/60 Ausf J - "Mark III Special". Designed to face off against other armor, the 50mm L/60 gun was a significant improvement over the original 37mm gun. However it would prove inadequate against the better armored American M4 Sherman and Soviet T-34/76 tank.
