While most of the Egyptian Army was conscripted, the Thunderbolt (or Sa’ka) forces were their Special Forces/commandos. Hand chosen and better trained than the regular forces, much was expected of them in the 1973 War. Egypt had 38 battalions of Thunderbolt (Sa’ka) troops ready by 1973. At least one Sa’ka unit was attached to every Egyptian infantry division that was involved in the canal crossing.
Egypt’s elite commando units are equipped with a variety of advanced weapons. Each company represents its own combined arms force and can effectively engage both enemy infantry and armour.
