The veteran riflemen of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) divisions have already proven themselves in battle against the Germans and Italians in North Africa. They dyed their desert khaki uniforms green on the ship to New Guinea and went straight into battle in their desert kit. Their slouch hats would prove very practical in the steaming heat and heavy rain. At Milne Bay and on the Kokoda track, the Japanese would soon learn their days of easy victories were over.
